Deputies arrest Charleston man after high-speed chase with 4-year-old in vehicle

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — A Charleston man is facing several charges after he allegedly led Berkeley County deputies on a high-speed pursuit with a four-year-old daughter and her mother in the vehicle Saturday.

Jamal Carl Hipp, 35, is charged with failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, reckless driving, open container of beer, child engangerment and two counts of kidnapping.

Deputies saw a vehicle driving in a reckless manner on I-26 westbound near Jedburg Road. They observed Hipp going over 100 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop in which he briefly stopped, but then fled.

During the pursuit, he reached speeds of 130 miles per hour and weaved through traffic. The chase continued when he exited the interstate onto Ridgeville Road, then reentered I-26 eastbound, where he struck another vehicle.
