‘They’re killing everybody’: Mother of Jamal Sutherland reacts to homicide of Mary Brucato

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Five years after her son died in custody at the Charleston County jail, Jamal Sutherland’s mother says there is still no accountability for the ongoing deaths inside the facility.

Amy Sutherland’s reactions come shortly after 23-year-old Mary Brucato’s August death inside the jail was ruled a homicide. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office listed the cause of death as complications of fentanyl intoxication, recent cocaine use and medical neglect.

Since the homicide ruling, a former inmate who was inside the facility a tthe time of Brucato’s death shared her story, a detailed timeline showed hours of missed care. Brucato’s family shared their cries for change and their attorney said legal action is expected to be filed within the next month.

Jamal Sutherland died back in January 2021 after repeatedly being tased inside the Charleston County Jail. His death was later ruled a homicide, which sparked public outcry against law enforcement and elected officials with a push towards reform.
