Elementary school implements innovative programs to boost attendance, achievement

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Charleston County Schools Superintendent Anita Huggins is highlighting recent gains on state assessment exams, particularly at Sanders Clyde Elementary, a high-poverty school on Charleston’s Eastside.

Principal Janice Malone said her school faces significant obstacles in educating students who experience trauma and violence in their daily lives.

“We have the highest poverty rating in Charleston, and we serve three public housing developments, and with that comes a lot of violence that our students experience, a lot of trauma that our children experience on a regular basis,” Malone said…
