Simple changes can cut heating costs by $40 per month, Berkeley Electric says

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — With family arriving for the holidays and everyone wanting different temperatures, electric companies are sharing tips to keep energy bills manageable during winter celebrations.

The Berkeley Electric Cooperative says simple changes can keep everyone comfortable while saving money, with the biggest impact coming from thermostat adjustments rather than turning off lights.

Thermostat settings drive biggest costs

Every degree above 68 costs about $10 per month, Berkeley Electric Cooperative spokesperson Libby Roerig says. A home kept at 72 degrees costs $40 more per month to heat than one at 68 degrees.

“For the average home, when you go above 68° you’re looking at an additional $10 per degree per month,” Roerig said. “So just know that’s going to be an increased cost the higher you go.”…
