CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Charleston County School District has the widest racial achievement gap among South Carolina’s 15 largest school districts, according to data presented by the Lowcountry Conservatives Club.
White students in Charleston County ranked first and second when compared to the other 14 largest districts on state assessments. Black and brown students from Charleston County ranked in the bottom tier.
“The other 15 large school districts, 9th, 10th, in some cases 14th, among their peers. That’s troublesome to me,” Maurice Washington, chairman of the Lowcountry Conservatives Club, said. “Why is the gap so much wider in Charleston County for African-American and Hispanic kids than it is in the other 14 large districts across the state?”
