New handheld device brings precision hip replacements to Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A small device that looks a lot like an iPhone is changing the way hip replacements are done at Novant Health East Cooper Medical Center.

While it may look simple, the Lantern Hip system is giving surgeons real-time data during surgery, helping patients recover faster and reducing complications.

Novant Health East Cooper is among just a handful of hospitals nationwide to launch the Lantern Hip system. Unlike traditional tools, this handheld device is physically attached to the patient’s leg after the new hip is placed. As the surgeon moves the leg through its normal range of motion, the device tracks those movements and compares them to the patient’s original anatomy…
