Berkeley County DUI prosecutor warns of impaired driving amid holidays

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — This year, Berkeley County has already seen 27 deaths directly linked to impaired driving, and officials warn those numbers will likely increase around the holidays.

With South Carolina leading the nation in impaired driving deaths, Berkeley County officials are reminding the community to stay away from the wheel if you are impaired. With the recent rise in DUI cases over the years, the county also has a dedicated DUI prosecutor for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, focusing on cases handled by deputies in the magistrate court.

“It’s definitely eye-opening that this is something that’s still happening, and it just reassures me that this role is needed,” Camille Weal-Thomas, the county DUI prosecutor, says. “It’s important to us to protect innocent lives.”…
