Kwanzaa celebrations happening around the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – December 26 marks the start of Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African and African American culture, and the Lowcountry has several events planned to honor the holiday.

Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 as a cultural holiday, with each day dedicated to seven core principles until the observance ends on January 1.

The principles listed in order of celebration days are umoja (unity), kujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (cooperative economics, nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity), and imani (faith)…
