CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Eleven people died on South Carolina roadways during the Christmas holiday travel period, according to data released by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
The figure represents one fewer death than the same period last year. Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said the goal is always zero fatalities.
Safety measures can prevent crashes
Ridgeway said vehicle crashes are preventable and outlined steps drivers can take to save lives. He said about half of the people who die in car crashes are not wearing seatbelts.
Safety recommendations include ensuring all passengers are buckled up, checking that children are properly restrained in correctly installed car seats, following the state’s hands-free law by avoiding cell phone distractions, adhering to speed limits and not driving impaired…
