Honoring the deceased in the Charleston County jail with a community vigil

A community vigil is scheduled for Monday afternoon at Ralph M. Hendricks Park in North Charleston to honor 23 individuals who died at the Al Cannon Detention Center over the past decade. Organized by the Lowcountry Action Committee, the event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. will feature name readings, testimonials, candle lighting, and calls for jail reforms.​

Key Individuals Honored

Mary Brucato, 23, from Ladson died on August 11, 2025, from fentanyl intoxication, cocaine use, and medical neglect; her case is ruled a homicide under SLED investigation. D’Angelo Brown, 28, passed away three years ago due to alleged medical neglect, including denial of schizophrenia and bipolar medications, sparking a 2023 family lawsuit.​​
