Charleston County Sheriff’s Office criticized for new inmate death policy

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is facing criticism after announcing a new policy to withhold information on inmate deaths deemed “natural” until a full investigation is conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the county coroner’s office.

This decision follows two recent deaths at the Al Cannon Detention Center, including Mary Brucato, whose death was ruled a homicide, and Mark Walker, whose cause of death remains undisclosed.
