Central Park Road to close through late February for final phase of drainage project

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — Central Park Road on James Island will close Tuesday so crews can begin work on the final phase of a major drainage project.

The last stretch of work includes the installation of tidal gates to control water flow, construction of sidewalks between Riverland Drive and Fleming Road, and placement of the final asphalt surface. This final phase caps a series of projects to improve the roadway and drainage in the area of Central Park Road, which is plagued with water during spring and king tides.

The road has been raised by as much as two feet and three two-foot drainage pipes have been installed, with the upcoming installation of the tidal gates designed to prevent incoming tides that exceed normal high-tide elevations…
