This Day in History: Jan. 4, 2018: Charleston begins digging out from from snow event

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Sunday marks eight years since the Lowcountry was shut down following the rare and historic 2018 winter snowstorm.

The storm brought significant snow and caused major disruptions, including closures of stores, roads and even Charleston International Airport.

Since the Lowcountry was not accustomed to this level of snowfall, there were power outages, schools and bridges were shut down and the state Department of Public Safety responded to hundreds of collisions.

However, once people realized they had days off or were stuck at home, residents decided to have some fun. Some made snowmen, while others had their sleds pulled by golf carts…
