CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – People in the community came together on Wednesday evening to mourn the death of Dr. Janell Green Smith, a Charleston midwife who had a great impact in the community.
People brought candles, flowers, and prayers for Janell. She died Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, while giving birth to her first child.
She spent much of her life working and studying to become a midwife in South Carolina. In her work, she tended to mothers in the area, supporting them through the difficulties of childbirth. Green was also an advocate and emphasized the importance of maternal health for Black women…
