SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – The Summerville Police Department (SPD) is utilizing mobile barriers that can stop vehicles in their tracks.
They are designed to protect pedestrians and large crowds from vehicle attacks. On contact, they snap up and impale the car, trapping it in place. SPD chief Doug Wright says it’s a life-saving device.
“I’ve seen it stop a 5,500-pound pickup truck,” Wright said. “Basically, when the vehicle strikes it, they flip forward, and the teeth that look like a forklift, they go up under the bottom of the vehicle and lock it in. It can’t pass over it. It’s pretty incredible.”
Wright says it will help deter attacks like the one in New Orleans on New Year’s Day…
