Future of U.S. Custom House in Charleston to be discussed at hearing this week

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The possible sale of the U.S. Custom House in Charleston will be discussed at a federal Public Buildings Reform Board hearing later this week.

The federally owned historic Custom House was built in 1853 to monitor trade activity coming into the harbor and currently sits at the corner of East Bay and Market Streets in downtown Charleston. The board will invite the public to discuss the process it uses to assess properties, gather public input on specific details about the properties and ultimately lead a discussion on what the building could be used for.
