North Charleston Fire Department offers advice on safely heating up homes

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – With overnight temperatures hitting the teens, the North Charleston Fire Department has some tips on safely keeping homes warm.

NCFD advises residents to:

  • Have one space heater plugged into a single outlet at a time, and turn them off when leaving rooms or going to bed.
  • Do not use an oven to heat your home.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from a heat source.
  • Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
  • Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container and keep outside, 10 feet away from structures.

U.S. Fire Administration reported 2,127 home fire fatalities in 2025, with 74 occurring in South Carolina.
