CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles generated $97 million over the past five years by selling personal data collected from services it provides.
The SCDMV sells information, including names and vehicle registration data, to companies such as LexisNexis, Experian Automotive, Southern Farm Bureau, American Driving Records and Auto Direct Data. LexisNexis spent nearly $320,000 on DMV data last year, making it one of the agency’s top customers.
