Intake screening at Al Cannon helps identify survivors of human trafficking, experts say

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Human trafficking is often misunderstood as a crime that happens far away, in other countries or major cities. But local leaders say the reality is far closer to home.

“I think most people believe that human trafficking is something that is happening internationally, abroad, something that couldn’t possibly be happening in their own neighborhoods,” said Kelly LaPlante, Chief Deputy Solicitor for the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office. “But it is happening right here.
