FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) — The annual Save the Light half marathon and 5k will be returning to Folly Beach Saturday, with race funds going toward supporting the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse for future generations.
“Save the Light is such a beautiful way to celebrate community and preservation through movement. We will make progress individually and communally, one stride at a time, one step at a time, be it a goal for fitness, for preservation or both,” said Charleston County Parks Fitness and Wellness Manager Allison Foster.
This USATF-certified race is put on yearly by the Save the Light non-profit, a grassroots organization that formed in 2000 in order to save the lighthouse from being lost to the sea. Though Save the Light transferred ownership of the light house to the state of South Carolina after purchasing it in 1999, the group still retains responsibility for planning, engineering, fundraising and execution of all aspects of the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse…
