Judge orders competency evaluation for woman charged in deadly Charleston chase

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A judge has ordered a suspect in a deadly police chase that ended in downtown Charleston last year to undergo an evaluation to determine whether she is competent to stand trial.

Judge Roger Young has ordered the Department of Mental Health to perform an evaluation of Margie Brown.

She is accused of leading officers on a chase in April 2025 in a U-Haul truck that ended in a deadly crash in downtown Charleston, killing two and injuring five. Brown is charged with reckless homicide caused by vehicular injury, second-degree assault and battery, failure to stop for blue lights resulting in death, two counts of failure to stop for blue lights resulting in bodily injury and improper turning.

Court officials say they do not believe she is competent to understand the criminal proceedings and that she has a “delusional view of the law and the legal defenses” on which she plans to rely. They say she has refused to leave her cell to attend hearings…
