FIRST ALERT – Recent Low Country quakes a reminder of state’s violent past

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) — South Carolina residents near Charleston felt the ground shake this week as a pair of minor earthquakes struck the Lowcountry region, reminding residents that seismic activity remains a threat in the state.

Late Saturday night, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred near Centerville, about 3 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor at 10:37 p.m. was the most powerful earthquake recorded in South Carolina in nearly six months, marking the strongest seismic activity since a 3.0 magnitude quake hit the Coronaca area on Aug. 23, 2025.

Earlier in the week, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake also struck near Centerville on February 3, continuing a pattern of minor tremors in the Lowcountry area. More than 800 people reported experiencing Saturday’s earthquake to the USGS.
