Mepkin Abbey monks offer sanctuary of silence in Lowcountry

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WIS) – At Mepkin Abbey, a driveway lined with live oaks invites visitors into a sanctuary of silence where Catholic monks have devoted their lives to prayer and the search for God for more than 75 years.

The Trappist monks at the monastery take vows of varying degrees, devoting themselves to silence, prayer and poverty while forsaking earthly comforts for a higher calling.

“The monastery environment is created for the search of God. So you want to let go of the things that get in the way of seeking God. So that’s what the life’s about,” said Father Joseph Tedesco. “So it’s amazing what can happen when you are in silence.”…
