CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The former executive director of the Charleston YWCA and founder of the city’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration has died at 97.
Christine O. Jackson served as executive director of the Charleston YWCA from 1966 to 2003, a tenure of 37 years. In 1972, Jackson founded the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, which is considered South Carolina’s largest tribute to King.
