Car catches fire after striking wheelchair-bound pedestrian who later died from injuries

CHARLESTON , S.C. (WCIV) — A car struck a pedestrian in a wheelchair on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard Friday night. The pedestrian later died from their injuries and the car caught on fire, according to local police.

The Charleston Police Department said its Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash, which occurred around 7:45 p.m. on March 6. The collision happened on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard near Gamecock Avenue.

Officers say a pedestrian in a wheelchair attempted to cross the busy West Ashley thoroughfare from Gamecock Avenue where there is no crosswalk or pedestrian signal. A Honda Element struck the pedestrian and it’s engine compartment caught fire, according to CPD. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital but later died from their injuries, CPD said…
