CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — (UPDATE, 6:00 p.m.) — The brush fire that burned acres in the Cainhoy area started around 1:22 p.m. on Wednesday, after a controlled burn “got away from the crew,” officials detailed at a press conference shortly following the expected final containment of the blaze.
Units with the Charleston Fire Department arrived on scene six minutes after it was called in, where they immediately called for additional crews to help slow the burn. The fire was contained by the first crews on scene, but the flames jumped the break twice, growing in size, officials said. That is when the Charleston Fire Department called for the South Carolina Forestry to aid in sending bulldozers to the scene, along with two air tankers to drop water on the perimeter of the fire.
