Pineville community restores historic rural clinic, now open to the public

PINEVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) — The Pineville community has restored the historic Maude E. Callen Health Clinic that served Berkeley County residents for decades.

Now open to the public, the nonprofit organization Friends of Maude Callen is responsible for restoring it and says the clinic will help celebrate and remember the work and life of Maude Callen. The Maude Callen Clinic opened in 1953 and served generations of low-income residents in Berkeley County, many of them Black. It was also one of the only sources of proper healthcare for women and children for the community. Throughout her work, she delivered more than 800 babies and trained more than 400 midwives.
