Charleston County sales tax draft sets aside $690M for Greenbelt projects

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — The Charleston County transportation sales tax draft for 2026 includes a significant amount of funding for greenbelt projects.

The draft currently proposes roughly $690 million of the proposed $4.56 billion program dedicated to greenbelt projects aimed at enhancing greenway corridors, trails and connecting communities with nature.

The 16% allocation marks an increase from previous allocations with about $221 million in 2004 and $210 million in 2016. County and environmental leaders say the increase marks an increased investment in green spaces to help manage growth and protect the quality of life…
