Isle of Palms homeowner says transformer showed warning signs for years before fire

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) — An Isle of Palms homeowner says a transformer that caught fire outside his home had shown warning signs for years — raising concerns about whether similar equipment across the island could be at risk.

Mike Boykin says he was out of town on March 16 when he got a call from a neighbor. “Your front yard’s on fire,” his neighbor told him.

They also told him a transformer had failed, catching the utility pole on fire and sending debris into nearby yards. The incident caused property damage and left more than 900 customers without power for several hours, according to Dominion Energy…
