National youth group brings literacy initiative to Lowcountry through service project

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Youth leaders from around the nation gathered in North Charleston on Saturday to make a lasting impact on the Lowcountry through literacy.

Participants with the Jack and Jill of America Foundation built permanent community libraries at Jenkins Youth & Family Village during a trip to the Lowcountry. Saturday’s event included storytelling grounded in Gullah Geechee history and Lowcountry culture.

Bouncy castles, food, games, books and more were part of Jack and Jill of America Inc.’s 2026 National Youth Trip. Participants shared culturally affirming books with local children and families.

With this year’s theme, “Journey to History: Lineage and Legacy in the Lowcountry,” participants from across the country are in Charleston to explore African American history and culture while giving back through hands-on service…
