Community leaders honor Walter Scott 11 years after fatal North Charleston shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Community leaders and family members gathered in Park Circle Saturday to remember Walter Scott, a man who was shot and killed by a North Charleston police officer during a traffic stop 11 years ago, and to reflect on how the case continues to shape calls for accountability and reform.

Scott, 50 at the time of the shooting, was pulled over for a broken brake light by Michael Slager, who was then an officer with the North Charleston Police Department. During the stop, Scott fled from his car and Slager fired, striking Scott five times in the back and killing him. The shooting was caught on camera.
