Citations issued for construction zone crossing amid Maybank Highway project

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A group of pedestrians received citations last week from the City of Charleston Police Department for crossing Maybank Highway at a new mid-block construction zone instead of using a pre-existing crosswalk.

Charleston County launched phase one of the safety projects in January after a series of accidents on Maybank Highway. Drivers were taking the curve too fast, putting pedestrians at risk.

The new mid-block crossing is still under construction. When complete, the project will add sidewalks, a landscaped median, fencing and a flashing crosswalk system…
