Missing Charleston woman’s husband arrested in connection to separate homicide cold case

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Robert McCaffrey, the husband of missing West Ashley mom Gayle McCaffrey who was at one point the prime suspect in her disappearance, has been arrested in connection to the 1990 murder of a New Jersey woman.

The 54-year-old was arrested Friday in Manteo, North Carolina in connection with the June 23, 1990 murder of Lisa Marie McBride in Vernon Township, NJ, according to Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez. Perez said that McCaffrey was taken into custody by a multistate task force and is pending extradition to New Jersey, where he will face charges of murder in the first degree, kidnapping in the first degree, and burglary in the second degree.

McBride was reported missing on June 23, 1990 after she didn’t pick up the phone following a night out in New York City, according to the New Jersey Herald. She was last seen around 2 a.m. entering her home, where police found the lights on, no sheets on her bed, the telephone line cut from outside, and two slits in a window screen.
