HCA Healthcare volunteers pack 10,000+ pounds of food for Lowcountry families in need

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Nearly 40 HCA Healthcare employees showed up for their community Saturday, volunteering at the Lowcountry Food Bank to help tackle food insecurity.

Employees from HCA Healthcare’s Trident, Summerville, Colleton and Live Oak Mental Health and Wellness hospitals, along with staff from the HCA Healthcare South Atlantic Division office, spent two hours sorting and packing food that will go directly to families across the Lowcountry.

In just two hours, the 40 volunteers packed 480 boxes of food that are to be delivered to school pantries. Rod Whiting, a spokesperson for HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital, said the 480 boxes weighed a total of 10,560 pounds and were packed at a rate of 167 pounds of food per minute.

In addition to filling the 480 boxes, the team of volunteers also sorted more than 12,000 pounds of sweet potatoes.
