Charleston zoning board delays West Ashley project that could remove dozens of trees

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A proposed development in West Ashley that could result in the removal of nearly 50 trees has been temporarily delayed after a decision by the Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals, following concerns from nearby residents.

The board met to consider a request tied to a project involving developer Middleburg and submitted by Mount Pleasant-based engineering firm Thomas & Hutton. The request seeks permission to remove 10 protected trees and 36 larger “grand trees” in the Grand Oaks neighborhood along Grand Oaks Boulevard. While the proposal had already been scaled back from an earlier request, it still drew opposition from community members.

Several residents said they are unhappy with the potential development, pointing to concerns about increased traffic, rising costs, and the impact on local wildlife.
