Walterboro man arrested on gun charges after crash

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The North Charleston Police Department arrested a Walterboro man following a crash on Wednesday.

David Leander Mitchell, 53, of Walterboro, was identified as a convicted felon after a criminal history check. Because of his prior convictions, he is prohibited from possessing firearms. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful possession of a firearm, officials said.

Officers responded to a crash about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at NAD Road and Highway 78. When officers approached the vehicle, they smelled marijuana, which gave them probable cause to search it, according to officials.
