Lithium battery sparks garage fire in Matthews

MATTHEWS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A lithium battery was the cause of a burning home in Matthews late Sunday night.

Just before 10 p.m. on June 14, Matthews Fire & EMS, along with the Charlotte Fire Department, responded to a structure fire on the 9500 block of Hunting Court. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the garage.

Within minutes, crews located and controlled the fire. It was determined that it did not extend beyond the attached garage into the home, officials said.

According to investigators, the homeowner heard crackling and saw smoke, at which point they evacuated the home and called 911…
