A violent Monday night thunderstorm ripped through Charlotte and punched a hole in one of the city’s key safety nets. Part of the ceiling in Roof Above’s Hub building collapsed into the nonprofit’s main dining room, shutting down the space indefinitely and halting crucial day services like laundry and showers. Staff quickly shifted meals and supplies to nearby locations while safety crews began inspecting the damage.
According to The Charlotte Observer, Roof Above has reworked its daily food distribution and is moving services to its Day Services Center, known as the Depot, which sits next door to the Hub. A news release from Friends of Roof Above reported that no one was injured in the collapse, and Roof Above spokesperson Eleanor Hatcher told the paper that laundry and shower access will be on hold while the nonprofit figures out alternative options for clients.

Roof Above typically serves lunch to more than 300 people every day, so relocating to the Depot is no small lift. The shift will push the Depot’s capacity and demand extra coordination with partner agencies. The nonprofit says it is working to secure temporary locations for showers and laundry and to keep medical care and ID services operating as steadily as possible.
