Protest planned over Morrison YMCA sale as questions linger about Ballantyne facility’s future

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A group opposed to the sale of the Morrison YMCA in Ballantyne is planning a protest this weekend to raise their concerns over the future of the south Charlotte facility.

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte announced in June that it had agreed to sell the Morrison property to Moments of Hope Church for $42.5 million as part of a “broader strategic reinvestment plan.” The facility is expected to remain open and operational until the sale closes in the summer of 2027.

Among those pushing back is JD Hopper, a Morrison YMCA member and former employee who helped organize the grassroots group Save Morrison YMCA. Hopper said the protest that is planned for Sunday outside of the building will be peaceful, but an opportunity to make their voices be heard.

“We wouldn’t be fighting this hard for the YMCA if we didn’t love it,” Hopper said…
