State Troopers Launch Multi-Agency Crackdown on Charlotte Highway Takeovers

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol kicked off Operation Queen City Overwatch on Friday. The mission is to shut down street takeovers and wild driving across Charlotte-area interstates. State troopers teamed up with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office.

Patrol officials built this operation after spotting more speed contests and organized takeover events along Charlotte-area interstates. Col. Freddy Johnson Jr., who commands the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, says they want to stop trouble before it starts.

“We have seen these issues across the state, where folks drive through these areas and are struck by a vehicle doing this extreme reckless driving, and our goal is to stop that,” Johnson said, according to WBTV 3…
