Charlotte Adds New Property Tax for University City Owners North of JW Clay Boulevard

Some University City property owners now owe an extra district tax—and it’s separate from anything coming from Raleigh or Mecklenburg County.

Charlotte City Council approved the expansion of Municipal Service District 5 on June 9, with the new levy taking effect July 1. The city ordinance adds $0.038 per $100 of assessed value on top of whatever property owners in the expanded district already pay.

Which properties are affected

The expanded boundary stretches north from JW Clay Boulevard into areas not previously covered by the district.

That includes parcels along and south of Mallard Creek Church Road between North Tryon Street and Mallard Creek Road, properties east of Mallard Creek Church Road near University City Boulevard and the Mecklenburg County line, and parcels near Pavilion Boulevard north of I-85.

What it costs

To estimate your bill: multiply your assessed value by 0.00038 (that’s $0.038 ÷ 100)…
