Layoffs around Charlotte: Over 1,600 people have lost their jobs so far this year

Over 1,600 layoffs have been announced this year in the Charlotte area. That’s a 10% increase from last year’s layoff announcements within the same time period.

More than 1,000 layoffs were announced from January through March, and the other 600 or so were from April through July, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices filed to the state’s Department of Commerce. Such notices are required by federal law during mass layoffs.

Through July, over 1,622 layoff announcements were made in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. That amounts to about 30.5% of the state’s layoffs this year, which is over 5,310 people…
