It may take longer than originally planned for a south Charlotte park shuttered after the discovery of hazardous materials to reopen.
Southside Park shut down in February 2025 after the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality found potentially dangerous levels of lead and cobalt in soil samples. At the time, Mecklenburg County told Observer news partner WSOC the park, which was previously a landfill, would be closed for 18 to 24 months to allow for clean-up.
