CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – We saw a few strong thunderstorms on Saturday, and those storms will become more widespread Sunday afternoon and evening in the Carolinas.
First Alert: Strong storms Sunday
Sunday will remain dry through mid-afternoon, with temperatures warming up into the low to mid 90s in the Charlotte area. The oppressive humidity will push heat index values to around 100 degrees for several hours in the afternoon, so stay hydrated and don’t over-exert yourself.
A little ripple in the upper levels of the atmosphere will help spark a better chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The first storms will develop in the mountains early in the afternoon, spreading into the foothills and Piedmont from late afternoon into Sunday evening.
A few storms could be strong or even severe, producing damaging straight-line winds and localized flooding. Those threats are low overall, but be flexible with any outdoor plans and stay weather-aware in the afternoon and evening.
Oppressive heat this week
The upcoming work week will bring limited storm chances and increasingly oppressive heat. Highs in the low to mid-90s will feel like 100-105 degrees each afternoon.
