Charlotte has approved 21 homeowners for forgivable loans up to $80,000 through the Queen City ADU Program to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. The city received 243 applications when the program opened last September. Two units have been completed.
An ADU is a secondary attached or detached residential structure on the same lot as a main house. These units can house family members or serve as rental properties, providing flexible living arrangements for property owners.
For the loan to be forgiven, participants must rent their space to those who make up to 80% of the area median income. For a family of three, that income threshold sits below $80,800. The rent also has to stay at or below the fair market rent for studio units at 70% AMI, which is $1,238…
