Charlotte-area storms could be severe, with possibly damaging winds, NWS says

Severe storms with potentially “damaging wind gusts” moved from the mountains into the Charlotte region Friday, including Rock Hill and other parts of Upstate South Carolina, National Weather Service meteorologists said.

Storms formed in the mountains Friday afternoon before pushing east, NWS forecasters said on social media site X.

Charlotte and Matthews were under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6 p.m., with 60-mph winds and nickel-sized hail possible. Monroe, Unionville and Wingate were under the threat until 7 p.m…
