Jail North prepares to reopen to alleviate overcrowding at Uptown detention center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden is nearly ready to bring hundreds of people to Jail North to help alleviate overcrowding at his Uptown detention center.

Even though it’s been closed since 2022, there wasn’t a ton of work needed to get this building back in shape to house people.

“I clearly knew that this was going to be open again,” said McFadden. “This is why we kept it in such good shape.”

A paint refresh, a good cleaning, and restocking supplies are about all it took to prepare Jail North to soon accommodate about 200 inmates…
