Suspect in fatal North Carolina hit-and-run arrested in Mississippi, police say

CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced Monday that a suspect involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Christmas was arrested in Mississippi.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) arrested Melvin Barahona-Zapata, 29, on Dec. 29.

Police say DCSO deputies found and stopped Barahona-Zapata’s red Ford F-150. CMPD detectives were able to positively identify him as the suspect.

Detectives were able to get warrants on Barahona-Zapata and he was extradited to Mecklenburg County. Jail records say he was charged with felony hit and run involving death. He was admitted on Jan. 18 and released on Jan. 19.
