Woman shot in leg after fight leads to shooting in Elizabeth, CMPD says

A woman was hurt when a fight led to a shooting in Elizabeth Wednesday afternoon, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD said she was shot around 11 a.m. on Cherry Street near Charlottetowne Avenue. MEDIC said she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz learned she was shot in the leg.

Investigators said a fight between two people known to each other led to the shooting. They quickly found the suspect and arrested him after he tried to run, just blocks away in the area of East Third Street and Kings Drive. The location isn’t far from the Midtown Target and several other restaurants and businesses.

A shelter-in-place was issued for the Central campus of Central Piedmont Community College. They said CMPD told them it was issued as “they tried to apprehend a violent suspect.”

“I was really worried,” said student Gigi Gandiaga.

“It’s nerve-wracking but at the same time, I’m glad I was out the way,” said student Ekoun Yao.
