‘Act of God’: Unknown timeline after York County greenway bridge washes out

FORT MILL, S.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A bridge along a Fort Mill greenway collapsed Monday, temporarily closing the area, after more rainfall came through the area over the weekend.

Users of the Anne Springs Close Greenway can’t use a pedestrian bridge that connected the Trestle Trail and Mill Pond Trail after it experienced a structural failure, resulting in its collapse.

Park rangers told Queen City News that the bridge near the intersection of Springfield Parkway and Merritt Road had been blocked off prior to Saturday’s storms and that Sunday afternoon it appeared to still be stable.

However, it rained 2.5 inches over the weekend and by Monday morning it was washed out.

“It was impacted by the weather, the large amounts of rain that we had several weeks ago,” explained Elizabeth Bowers, the communication strategist for the Anne Springs Close Greenway.

“We lost three pilings underneath it,” Bowers continued. “So we knew it was significantly impacted with that rain event. So it had already been closed. It really was an act of God that took it out. Mother Nature likes to rearrange things, and that’s certainly what we’re seeing here.”
